The latest issue of Ghostbusters: Dead Man's Chest starts off with a bang! Continuing to pin an army of aquatic apparitions against the Spenglers, AND New York!
We kick things off with the perfect cold open to what should be a Ghostbusters TV show: A mother walks in on her kid having tea with a translucent pirate guest. She’s got a ghost, but she’s not about to play host!

With hauntings hitting all corners of the city, the team’s stretched thin! So much so, they enlist the help of Janine Melnitz, implying she's moved on from receptionist duties. It’s a beat that hasn’t been clearly addressed in the films, and one we’d love to see the comics dive deeper into.
Meanwhile, across town, Phoebe and her pal Sammy continue their kid-detective side quest, trying to crack the connection between Sammy, phantasmal foe Captain Kidd, and whatever unfinished business is fueling him. Their hunt for Kidd’s old stomping grounds hilariously leads to a gentrified health food store. Because of course it does.

In an incredibly tense moment that left us biting our nails, Phoebe and Sammy sneak around snoozing specters. The anxiety is high, and the jokes are painfully perfect. Phoebe’s Spengler-style quips in an attempt to add levity to the situation, land like dad jokes. Gary would be proud.

Phoebe, forever trying to put together the puzzle pieces of this monster mystery uncovers Kidd might have his own unfinished business. Maybe this isn't one of those ghosts that needs to be busted? Maybe this is a wrong that needs to be set right?? Time will tell.
In a pin drop moment that'll shiver your timbers, the two make an edge of your seat escape, their assailant is met hastily with a proton stream and fast trap! If there's one thing Phoebe is good at in regards to being a teenager, it's having to have mom and dad come bail you out of a tough spot. Even if that spot is a little more para than normal.
In a waste of a pun-worthy moment, as noted quickly by Gary, the two are riding with sails high aboard a spectral pirate ship! Callie doesn't just go into mom mode here, she's giving leadership vibes. The comics are giving us a more nuanced, capable Callie, a real evolution from the Afterlife Callie, and it’s working. She doesn't JUST have to be a mom, she's got a herd these kids, AND Gary not only as a family but as a team.

The character building with some of these characters this mini series has been subtle but incredible and I hope we continue to see more of it!
Following suit is Trevor, and Lucky + Doctor Dan, in the Ecto-1. Rocketing into the scene exactly the way we expect it to, as the artist continues to capture some of that iconic imagery we associate with Ghostbusters. It's then we're quickly reminded why all of this started in the first place- there's something going on with Sammy, AND her Dad.
Back at the firehouse, while the team continue to formulate a plan, we also take a beat to open up about what exactly is going on? At the heart of every major Ghostbusters story from GB2 forward, there's always been a very human element, something to balance out the...not human. In this instance it's the distance and misunderstanding growing between Sammy and her dad.

Following some of Sammy's life choices, she can't understand why her father can't just accept them instead of trying to understand and analyze them. It's in this moment through Phoebe we learn this isn't really just a Sammy problem, it's an everyone problem. Everyone, at some point in their lives has likely been under the microscope by a parent or even friend who couldn't quite understand WHY they were doing what they were doing. Even something as simple as being incredibly interested in Ghostbusters! Meanwhile, we're reminded it's in that effort to understand- that it means the other person just cares.
The calm is short lived and chance for reconciliation delayed as Captain Kidd makes a guest appearance on this otherwise sentimental moment, and leaves us on SEAriously killer cliffhanger!

Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest continues to balance zap and trap action with rich character beats. It’s funny, heartfelt, visually killer, and teases with just enough supernatural mystery to make us CRAVE the next piece of this paranormal adventure!
