SPOILERS AHEAD
The final issue of Ghostbusters: Dead Man's Chest wastes no time throwing us straight into the chaos. Sammy’s been kidnapped by Captain Kidd, and the Ecto-1 rockets through New York in a nautical nightmare chase sequence that feels ripped from the screen. Even veteran buster Ray Stantz drops everything, strapping on his own gear just to make sure he doesn’t miss out on the fight.

From the jump, this series continues to nail what it does best: character voices. Gary Grooberson especially steals the spotlight, milking every moment for pirate puns and proving that busting really does just make Gary feel good. He's having the time of his life. It’s that mix of humor and heart that makes the team dynamic shine.

Inside Kidd’s stronghold, disguised in life as a simple health food market, we finally get deeper hints at the Captain’s past. As Sammy pleads with their captor, the creative team drops just enough cryptic details to let readers piece things together themselves. It’s clever storytelling that makes you feel like you’re investigating right alongside the Ghostbusters.
The issue also delivers a big reveal about placement in the GB film timeline. Dark Horse has confirmed these comics take place in the two years between Afterlife and Frozen Empire. By the time of Dead Man’s Chest, the Spengler family has been officially busting ghosts for about six months-which leaves at least a year’s worth of stories left to mine before Garraka enters the picture. That’s a lot of room to keep exploring!

And then, enter “Ghost Time.” Leave it to Gary to coin the very “technical” term for a pocket reality that bends time, space, and logic. Here, the team is transformed into full-on swashbucklers wielding Proton Swords. It’s one of the boldest swings yet from this series, and the result feels like a crossover between the films’ grounded reality and the high-concept fun of The Real Ghostbusters. Kidd’s lair becomes a gauntlet of ghoulish guards, each encounter building toward the inevitable showdown with the Captain himself.
That confrontation pays off big: Kidd’s driving motivation isn’t treasure at all, but the son he lost centuries ago. Sammy becomes caught in a heartbreaking case of mistaken identity, underscoring one of the series’ recurring themes-figuring out who you are, even when others try to define you.
Lucky for Sammy, they’re backed by none other than Phoebe Spengler. If there’s one throughline from the films to the comics, it’s Phoebe’s unshakable courage. We’ve already seen her face down Gozer and Garraka without flinching, so Kidd never stood a chance.

Her plan nearly turns the tide, but thanks to the twisted rules of “Ghost Time,” the team is still left gearless at the critical moment. Cue Ray Stantz and the triumphant return of the drone trap from issue 1, sending Kidd and his phantom fleet straight back to the depths.
The wrap-up is as heartfelt as it is satisfying. Sammy finds closure with their father, the Spenglers own up to their proton mishaps at the museum, and the team as a whole feels stronger for it. The closing beats land with the same mix of humor, action, and warmth that defined The Real Ghostbusters, and that’s high praise.

Looking back across the whole arc, Dead Man’s Chest feels like Dark Horse’s most confident Ghostbusters outing yet. It balances lore drops, character growth, and laugh-out-loud moments while still daring to swing into wild, unexpected territory. For longtime fans who miss the IDW era, this proves new voices can honor the source while carving their own lane.
Verdict: The explosive finale of Ghostbusters: Dead Man's Chest left us laughing, cheering, dodging slime, and turning the last page, craving the next case with warmth in our hearts. If this is the new standard for Ghostbusters comics, we say bring on more haunts.
