The highly anticipated fan film, Ghostbusters: Half-Life is officially streaming on YouTube! Fans and viewers are immediately greeted with a familiar music score that, while original to this fan film, absolutely invokes the spirit of Elmer Bernstein, Ghostbusters: Half-Life wastes no time pulling you into its supernatural world. The soundtrack acts as the perfect backdrop to the film, carrying that adventurous, slightly spooky, Saturday afternoon energy that feels ripped straight from the golden era of Ghostbusters.

The film asks that we suspend some disbelief in the same way a great 90’s kids movie might, and honestly, that’s part of the charm. All of the child stars step confidently into their adult counterparts’ shoes and manage to do so without taking you out of the story. Instead, it creates this fun alternate-universe vibe that feels both nostalgic and fresh.

The project is packed with phantasmally fun Easter eggs and references to other classic projects including Stripes, Groundhog Day, and Spies Like Us, rewarding longtime fans without ever becoming distracting. They’re sprinkled throughout with genuine love for the extended world surrounding Ghostbusters and Ivan Reitman-era comedy.

Given that this is a kid-centric project, the ghosts manage to strike a surprisingly effective balance between silly and scary. The creature effects are stellar, helping these ghouls feel weird, chaotic, and genuinely otherworldly. Even cooler, the kids involved in the production reportedly had a hand in helping choose the looks for the ghosts, which gives the entire project an extra layer of personality and imagination.

Aside from souring spirits and proton streams, the practical effects and makeup work used throughout several on-set gags are worth highlighting too. There’s a scrappy creativity here that feels incredibly authentic to the spirit of independent filmmaking and practical-effects-driven genre movies.

Sitting comfortably within its approximately 30-minute runtime, the film flows remarkably well and harnesses the same fast-paced supernatural energy as an episode of The Real Ghostbusters. It never overstays its welcome, constantly moving from laughs to chaos to spooky spectacle at just the right pace.

And while quick, the William Atherton cameo is incredibly welcome, fun, and surprisingly well-played without ever feeling forced or gratuitous. It’s the kind of appearance that fans will absolutely appreciate.

Taking place in an alternate 1994, the project also offers a fun nod toward the future of the franchise and Egon’s continued fascination with Oklahoma, adding another clever layer to the expanded mythos this fan film is building.

Ghostbusters: Half-Life brings genuine big screen energy from these small supernatural superstars. It immediately pulls you in with laughs, fast pacing, memorable effects work, and enough heart to make it feel like a worthy supernatural thrill ride across the country and directly into the extended fan film Ghostbusters mythos.

This is two years of work lovingly and passionately channeling the spirit of Ghostbusters and manifested by way of director, Kevin Croxton, the talent filling the halls of the music club, and the help of other talented creators.

Be sure to stay until after the credits for one last supernatural surprise.
