"Ghostbusters: Nightmare On 34th Street" Reportedly In Development With Sonic Writer
Earlier today, industry insider and scooper Daniel Richtman shared via his Patreon, that a new live action Ghostbusters film is in development!
The current (working) title for the project is Ghostbusters: Nightmare On 34th Street, with writer Josh Miller attached. Miller is best known for the live action Sonic the Hedgehog films, as well as the Christmas action franchise, Violent Night. With that recent list as well as several others in his repertoire, Miller apparently has an affinity for Christmas centric films!
It should be noted with any rumor, this absolutely should be taken with a grain of salt. As it stands, there are allegedly several other Ghostbusters projects in development with only one actually confirmed and news on that front has been few and far between.
The scooper, Richtman's, track record is mixed, but he's been right before. Having broken real scoops, but also posting a lot of claims that never materialize.
Also important is to note that potential working titles aren't necessarily indicators of the film's plot. Ghostbusters: Firehouse most certainly is an example of that and honestly, we even thought Frozen Empire had the potential to be Christmas themed! While it's not always associated, Christmas as a holiday is RICH with paranormal activity and ghastly stories. Ghostbusters 2 most certainly takes place over the holiday leading up to New Year's Eve, and the Ghostbusters have even taken on Ebenezer Scrooge's spirits in The Real Ghostbusters animated series.
If the title is in fact any sort of indicator to the plot, there are several note worthy landmarks in New York on 34th Street that would make wild backdrops for a supernatural stand off.
Meanwhile, several other things are left to question with this rumor! How, if at all, are Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan involved? Is this the third in the Spengler family story? Or is Ghostbusters about to see another reboot?
Previously, during an exclusive watch party for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the creative duo behind all of the most recent Ghostbusters projects claimed they had a road map to the future of the supernaturally spectacular franchise, 'We're really interested in the whole story of Ghostbusters. That's part of our roadmap for telling these Ghostbusters stories. Filling in some of these gaps to these questions that we all have.' Leaving us to wonder if this is all part of the plan?
In any case, if true, this is obviously exciting! Moreover, Josh Miller handles a sort of witty comedy vibe mixed in with otherwise serious elements that would work all too well for the world of Ghostbusters. Maybe it's time for a fresh take on the expanded lore! In the meantime, fans can still get excited about the more recent upcoming expansion to the Ghostbusters lore, Ghostbutsers: Night Shift set to hit Netflix some time next year.
