"Smooth seas never made skilled Ghostbusters." Thankfully, Dead Man’s Chest issue 2 doesn’t coast—it sails. Potential Minor SPOILERS Ahead.

The latest issue kicks things off with a seriously scenic opening—Lady Liberty in all her glory, with Trevor and Lucky celebrating their “friendversary.” It’s an unexpectedly tender start, courtesy of Trevor’s thoroughly scheduled itinerary (peak oldest sibling energy), and gives fans something we rarely get between films: character growth on the page. Much like those unseen years between Peter and Dana, we’re invited to speculate, dream, and maybe even ship a little.

But Lucky’s wish for “something a little more spontaneous”? Yeah, that’s granted fast. Enter a tentacled, statue-munching kraken—Captain Kidd’s ghostly sea beast making Liberty Island anything but relaxing. Surprise!

Meanwhile, back at the Firehouse, it's 8PM. Do you know where your kids are? Because the Spenglers... don't.

Gary and Callie—parenting adjacent—are caught elbow-deep in tech tinkering, only to realize without the kids, they’re working with half a mind. That said, the duo shines here: Gary’s golden retriever optimism (delivered with that signature Rudd charm), and Callie’s perfectly-timed dry wit make their dynamic both hilarious and heartfelt. And let’s not forget the wildcard: Doctor Dan—science celeb, worried dad, and prisoner to Gary Grooberson- walking dad-joke factory. If you groaned and laughed at Gary's lines... welcome to the club.

The dialogue throughout this issue is dead on. Seriously, every character’s voice is so well-written, it’s impossible not to hear the actors delivering each line in your head.

Phoebe, ever the lone wolf with a proton pack, opts to stay behind with Ray Stantz as the comic takes a thoughtful beat. Here, we get a dose of delicious lore: Kidd’s ghostly legacy, Sammy’s connection to it, and the kind of spooky backstory that makes Ghostbusters Ghostbusters. It’s nice to see the team treat ghosts as more than just trap-fodder. Sometimes the research is just as thrilling as the zap. And while the chaos on Liberty Island ramps up, our full squad (minus one Phoebe) locks and loads. Lucky joins the frontline, proton pack blazing, but it’s not enough—the kraken has tentacles for days. That is... until Doctor Dan steps in, nailing a drone trap maneuver that would make Egon proud. It’s another reminder that Ghostbusting, like family, was always meant to be a team effort.

But before anyone can breathe easy—BOOM. Kidd returns, now commanding a fleet of supernatural ships. With cannons aimed straight at NYC, the stakes skyrocket, and so does our excitement! Sure, some fans will quickly compare the premise to The Real Ghostbusters episode also featuring spectral swashbucklers, but make no mistake: Dead Man’s Chest is blazing its own spectral trail. With richly layered art, sharp as a proton-blast writing, and characters we love being their best, weirdest selves, Issue 2 proves this comic isn’t just fan service—it’s franchise gold.
