During a time of media dormancy as Ghostbusters projects continue to be developed in the background, a new rumor suggests that the franchise is about to get proton charged!
Via insider ItsMyTimeToShineHello on X, Sony is apparently developing four new Ghostbusters films! One being a live action follow up to Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which released last year, as well as a planned animated trilogy!
While a third installment in the Reitman/Kenan chapter of the franchise is more than certain - as we know the creative duo is already hashing out details to continue the Spengler family story- an animated film is something Sony has been inching towards since 2015, as announced by then director and producer, Ivan Reitman.

Previously, we've already seen some failed attempts at getting an animated Ghostbusters feature on to the big screen, including one that would have seen the franchise from the ghost's point of view, we're more than interested in seeing what that style of storytelling could bring! Furthermore, a trilogy is only "planned". We can't say for sure if we'll see more than one until the ONE is greenlit and hopefully does well at the box office.

Meanwhile, this wouldn't be off brand for Sony as we've also seen success in titles like Into The Spiderverse play alongside their live action counterparts.
While it's been confirmed several times over that an animated series is currently being developed for Netflix in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, Ghost Corps, and Flying Bark Studios- it's comforting to know it's not just planned to be a one off and that we could possibly see multiple seasons! All this means is that, that's what the creative team is aspiring for. The ultimate outcome of the animated series passed the first season will be determined by Netflix and overall viewership.
Just earlier this month, Director of content acquisition at Neflix, Dominique Bazay, took to the stage at Annecy Festival to talk about the newest animated adventure, describing it as, "Ghostbusters like you've never seen it!"
The animated series was first announced on Ghostbusters Day in 2022, at a Sony Pictures event in California. In the two years to follow, the series has shifted into full development! Gil Kenan has since revealed he had seen a presentation for the series, including sets, environments, and "a world of supernatural characters."

Netflix has since elaborated on the direction of the series, saying, "the high end series is part of the streamer's elevated family animation line up, delivering irreverent supernatural comedy and thrilling visual spectacle!" The latest animated adventure in the Ghostbusters franchise is being developed by Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Elliot Kalan. We can't emphasize enough, these are rumors. Meanwhile, for now it's comforting to know Ghostbusters is nowhere near it's afterlife.
