The Simpsons Bring Ghostbusters Vibes To Latest Treehouse Of Horror!
Nothing quite rings in the spooky season like the latest installment of The Simpson's annual Treehouse of Horror special!
The seasonal episodes are a tradition spanning back to the show's early days, featuring non-canonical seasonal stories, often spoofing popular horror or sci-fi properties! This year, so far, has been no exception!
The plot serves as a parody of slasher films like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream, acting as a direct allegory for how the show handles its controversial characters.
Earlier scenes in the episode feature The Simpsons family attending a town Halloween party where, each wearing a "meta" costume, with Homer as a Ghostbusters, complete with proton Pack, and custom patches!
Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that the entire town of Springfield, including Marge Simpson on a contraband-filled boat and Chief Wiggum, individually ran over, injured, or accidentally left the exact same masked man for dead that very same night. Durring the Halloween themed boat excursion, Comic Book Guy can be seen wearing a Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man costume.
Similarly, Ralph Wiggum is seen wearing a smaller version of the same Stay-Puft costume in a previous Simpsons episode! Stay-Puft is also used in a class presentation as an example of "famous pale people".
We've talked some before about how very few shows take it upon themselves to parody The Simpsons very often, while The Simpsons parody seemingly everyone and everything! Meanwhile, one of the earliest examples of a show tipping their hat to the Simpsons was in fact, The Real Ghostbusters! The supernatural take on The Simpsons can be seen in The Real ghostbusters episode, "Guess What's Coming to Dinner".
While Ghostbusters has been referenced in background or closing gags a handful of times in The Simpsons, it's a wonder it's taken this long for someone to show up on screen in a Ghostbusters uniform! Especially in regards to a Halloween special!
